Case Study: Working as an Emergency Care Assistant

Following the success of our Paramedic recruitment, we are now on the hunt for passionate Emergency Care Assistants to join #TeamECS! One of our full time ECAs, Matt, has kindly shared his story with us to give a flavour of what it is like to work with ECS.

Matt Pitman, ECA

For the last 25 years, I have been an Account Director for a large printing company. Whilst I enjoyed this role, I was increasingly finding the work unfulfilling and tedious.

Outside of work, I joined Hampshire Search and Rescue and undertook my FREC 3 and FREC 4 qualifications.

To get more patient facing experience I attended a recruitment day at ECS and signed up on the spot following an interview and clinical assessments.

As a bank First Responder, I enjoyed the numerous events and patient transport shifts so much that in 2023 I decided to quit my old job and join #TeamECS full time!

ECS put me through my four week L3 CERAD course, and soon after I was working my first frontline shift as an ECA. The experienced Paramedics that I crewed with were all absolutely brilliant and made me feel at ease.

During the three months I have now been on the road, I have attended a range of incidents including cardiac arrests, MIs, and on a happier note, a birth! On any jobs that have had a sad outcome, the team have always checked on me and offered support if I need to chat through anything.

I am thoroughly enjoying my life at ECS and for the first time for years, I look forward to going to work. They could not have done more to support me in my new career and my pathway to becoming a
Paramedic.
